Paid search remains the foundation

Classic search ads are still where commercial intent is captured at scale, with mature auction mechanics, measurement and policy. Nothing in the answer-engine shift has replaced that yet; what has changed is where else placement can happen and what the same pages must now establish to be eligible.

Ads inside AI-mediated search

Google’s pattern so far extends existing campaigns into answer surfaces: ads appear within AI Overviews with no separate bidding, and the AI Mode formats announced in May 2026 follow the same approach. The operating consequence is unglamorous. Eligibility rides on the campaigns and pages you already run.

Answer-engine advertising beyond Google

OpenAI is testing labeled sponsored units in ChatGPT for US free-tier users. Microsoft serves ads and commerce surfaces in Copilot. Perplexity, the first pure answer engine to sell ads, is reported to have wound its program down. The matrix below carries the dated detail; the pattern worth keeping is that these surfaces open, scope and close faster than annual planning cycles.

Community and video environments

Before a direct query happens, research happens: in community threads, in video, in forums that answer engines now license and cite. Reddit is both a paid channel and, since its 2024 licensing deal with Google, a supply line into machine-composed answers. These environments shape which businesses get asked about by name.

Eligibility and sensitive categories

Every surface carries policy constraints, and they bind hardest in regulated and sensitive categories: health, finance, personal circumstances. A surface being generally available does not make a category eligible on it. Category-level verification belongs in the plan.

Measurement requirements

A new surface without measurement is a rumor with a budget. Before spend moves, the questions are mechanical: what identifier survives the click, what event can be observed, what outcome can be matched back. In assistant surfaces, identifiers often do not survive yet. Where they do not, the honest fallback is incrementality thinking. See Measurement.
