Reach buyers while AI is helping them decide

Answer-engine advertising is paid placement inside AI-assisted research, comparison and recommendation. It is not one channel.

What the channels actually are

Someone working through a purchase with an assistant gives away far more context than a short keyword query does. These are the places that context is currently for sale, what each one is, and how each one is bought.

ChatGPT: sponsored units

Live. A purpose-built ad platform rather than an extension of one you already run. It carries its own account structure, cost-per-click bidding alongside the original CPM buying, conversion-optimized campaigns, a measurement pixel and a conversions API. Self-serve buying is open across the US, the UK, 31 European countries, India, the Middle East and North Africa, the unit is a labeled sponsored card at the bottom of the conversation, and the conversions API takes lead, appointment and offline events. Sponsored units are shown to the Free and Go tiers only.

Reddit Ads

Live. Self-serve and global, it sells Feed and Conversation placement, Dynamic Product Ads, Reddit Max and a Shopping Listing Ads alpha. Ads on Reddit's own search surface are an exploration management has spoken about, not a product. Reddit is not sold here as an answer engine. It is the research surface underneath one: community threads are where a shortlist gets formed before anyone searches, and Reddit content is licensed to Google for Search and AI training under an agreement reported in 2024.

Google: ads in AI Overviews

Live. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible for the placement. There is no separate opt-in, no separate bid, no way to target it and no way to refuse it. Impressions are reported as Top Ads, so the placement has no reporting line of its own to be judged on.

Google: AI Mode ad formats

Testing. Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, announced at Google Marketing Live and still described as a test on US mobile and desktop. General availability, pricing and dedicated AI Mode bidding controls are not established, so the work here is readiness rather than budget.

Copilot: ads in conversations

Live. Bought through Microsoft Advertising, on a rollout centered on the US. Eligible campaigns are opted in automatically, with no opt-out and no Copilot-specific metrics, so the placement is earned by the account the same way the Google one is. The most recent announcement centers on commerce rather than lead generation, so whether this belongs in a plan depends on what the business sells and not on the surface being new.

What is monitored and not sold

Two kinds of thing sit outside the record. Naming them is more useful than presenting the list above as the whole map.

Buyers research in both, and neither is recorded as answer-engine ad inventory

Meta
Planned and bought as part of the channel mix where it fits the business, and not presented here as an answer surface.
YouTube
The record does not establish whether it becomes an answer surface with inventory of its own, so it is planned as part of the channel mix and nothing more.

Emerging networks and in-app placements in long-tail vertical inventory, carrying no capability claim

Koah
Sells placement inside third-party AI apps through an SDK, with its own formats and demo-led access; nothing about results is established here.
Velocity
The same model, an SDK into third-party AI apps, with access through a contact form and no advertiser named on its own record.
Gravity
An exchange for text ads inside AI apps, with developer documentation published and access arranged through sales.
SDK placements in vertical apps
The idea is paid placement inside long-tail vertical inventory, and it becomes a test when the measurement can read it.

None of the three sells placement inside ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot on any primary record.

This is early on purpose. Digital Traction is monitoring the space and will help a client run a controlled experiment in it once the foundation and the measurement are in place. Before that there is no number worth putting against it.

Inside Google, the way in is the search account

There is no AI Overviews lever to pull: ads reach the placement because existing campaigns are eligible, not because anyone bought it. That single fact decides how the work is done.

The levers are the ones the search account already has: which queries are bought, which are excluded, whether the ad answers the question that was asked, and whether the landing page continues it. The placement is filled by the same campaigns and the same signals, so the account that earns it is the account that was already working.

That is why the foundation and the answer-engine work are one project rather than two budgets. A query map the business can defend, negatives that hold, pages that answer the query in the language it was bought in, and a conversion signal that reports a qualified outcome instead of a page view. Those are the four things paid search has always needed, and they are also what decides whether a placement inside an AI answer is worth anything.

Answer-engine tests are planned inside the same acquisition system as paid search and paid social, and read against the same outcome.

Each status word above is read from the maintained availability records, which carry the market, the primary source and the date that row was last checked. Live means an advertiser can buy it today, testing means the platform has confirmed a limited test, announced means a format has been announced but is not yet buyable, and unverified means the current status cannot be established from a primary source.

Perplexity is the case that shows why. Advertising launched in 2024 and stopped taking new advertisers in 2025. The wind-down has been reported rather than announced by Perplexity, so the record says unverified instead of guessing, and nothing is recommended against it.

What we will not do

  • Treat an announced product as generally available
  • Recommend budget simply because a surface is new
  • Put a number against a network we are only monitoring
  • Guarantee access, placement or performance
  • Pretend every AI environment deserves a media line item
  • Confuse organic AI visibility with paid placement

What makes a business ready to test

  • Offer clarity

Someone arriving mid-decision can tell what is being offered and who it is for

  • Proof and evidence

There is something substantiated for an answer engine to cite, not just claims

  • A measurable outcome

The business can name the action worth paying for, and see it when it happens

  • Enough signal to judge it

The volume is there to tell a real result from noise inside the test window

A test that cannot be judged is not a test. Where one of these is missing, that gap is the work worth doing first.

The same read, on your account

The diagnosis is the first step and it is not charged for. What is offered is an honest read and sensible, evidence-backed decisions, not a promise about lead volume.
